Hello beauties,
We’ve all heard how amazing Retinol and Vitamin A is, but how many of us actually use it? Personally, I’ve always been a bit scared and thought it was used for anti-aging. Oh how wrong I was!
Retinol, also known as Vitamin A is a great treatment product for most skin ailments such as wrinkles, hyper pigmentation and acne. At an Ultraceuticals event I was recommended Ultraceuticals Ultra A Skin Perfecting Serum Mild* which is their introductory Retinol to use on my blemish prone skin. I was recommended it as they explained it would regulate my oils, unclog my pores, reduce the number of break outs and help any blemishes heal quicker.
Below are some images of my skin prior to using the Ultraceuticals Ultra A Skin Perfecting Serum Mild*. As you can see there are some active breakouts and redness in those areas.
To start off I used it every second night after cleansing and finished off with moisturising. Upon first application, there was a slight stinging feeling which subsided quite quickly. That continued for the first week but stopped soon after. Now I don’t feel any stinging when I apply the Retinol.
A side effect of using Retinols is your skin can get a bit flaky. Personally I noticed only a bit of flakiness around my nose, but I stopped applying so much on my nose and I no longer noticed any flakiness. Basically, don’t be alarmed if you have a bit of flakiness, its very normal.
Over the past two months I’ve been using the Ultraceuticals Ultra A Skin Perfecting Serum Mild* almost every night and my overall skin texture has improved a lot. My skin texture is a lot smoother and my complexion is a lot more brighter and clearer. If I do have any blemishes, I’ve found since using the Retinol they’ve healed a lot quicker and are less inflamed. Below shows my skin after using Retinol for just over two months.
And yes, I noticed that I’m wearing the same top in my before and after photos #random
Another thing to keep in mind when using Retinol is that it makes your skin more sensitive. Because your skin is more sensitive SPF is a must! We all know that SPF is essential, but personally I know I’ve always been slack in that department. Since using Retinol, I’ve been such a good girl and apply SPF every morning. The Ultraceuticals Ultra UV Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF 30 Hydrating* is great to use in the morning and doesn’t make me oily throughout the day.

I’ve always been so intrigued by retinal, I keep getting told it’ll probably help my acne, but I’ve never really tried it! Such an interesting read xx

Glad I could help Laura! I didn’t realise retinol could help with acne. Once I knew that, I was willing to give it a go and it really has helped x

I’ve never used retinol before but I know a lot of people swear by it.

I’m late on the bandwagon but I have noticed a difference. I think the key is to go to a qualified beauty therapist. When we self diagnose, we can make the wrong decisions for our skin x

Rachel did you initially break out a lot when you started using retinol? I ask this as I understand that the skin will purge all of the impurities once you start using it but should get better. Personally I have tried Ultraceuticals vit A for at least 4 months but broke out so much despite only using it twice a week that I decided to stop. What do you think I could be doing wrong?

No I didn’t break out and I only had minimal flakiness. I’m not sure why you broke out. I would recommend you go back to your beauty therapist and tell them you broke out. They will then be able to recommend a more suitable product for your skin concerns xx
